한국의 전통 타악과 서양 클래식의 선율, 선율 국악기인 대금, 가야금과 서양의 클라리넷, 첼로 등 장르를 초월한 각각의 솔로 악기가 동해안장구를 비롯한 한국의 전통타악기와 듀오로 만나 경계를 넘나들며 융합하는 현대의 전통, 새로운 창작 음악을 선보인다.

한국과 서양의 전통음악에 뿌리를 둔 현대 전통 창작 음악 전통 중에서도 타악적 정체성이 뚜렷한 동해안 무악 가락과 장단이 서양의 전통음악인 클래식의 선율과 조우한다. 우리 전통음악과 서양 클래식의 만남이 전에 없었던 것은 아니지만, 기존에 주로 시도되었던 오케스트라 구성에 1인 협연, 전통과 클래식 연주자 4인 이상의 구성 등 한쪽 장르에 치우치는 음악적 효과를 위한 협업 형태는 지양한다.

[1+1= THE ONE]이라는 제목처럼, 본 프로젝트는 전통타악 연주자 1명이 클래식 연주자 또는 클래식 선율 작법이 전통 선율과 조우한 대금과 가야금 연주자 1인과 듀오로 만나, 각자가 연주하는 장르의 음악적 정체성과 특징이 직관적으로 비교, 대비될 뿐 아니라, 이 서로 다른 장르와 연주자가 함께 소통하고 호흡하며 이끌어내는 새로운 소리와 음악을 통해 경계를 넘는 새로운 전통음악 (THE ONE)을 창작하는 여정을 관객과 함께한다.

전통타악 본연의 소리와 주법 다변화를 통한 어쿠스틱 전통타악의 음악적 표현 확장 ‘1인 오케스트라’에서 자주 사용되는 루핑이나 미디같은 전자음악 기법의 도움 없이 전통 타악 본질의 소리와 연주 스타일을 집중 탐구하고 실험하여, 1인 타악 연주가 가능한 악기 구성과 연주법을 고안, 어쿠스틱을 본질로 하는 전통 타악의 음악적 표현 영역을 확장, 제시한다.

​1인 멀티 솔리스트로서의 전통타악 역할 및 장르 구축 ‘필연적 조우’는 1인 전통 타악 연주와 다른 장르의 예술 협업을 목표로 하는 [1+1=THE ONE] 프로젝트의 첫 시작으로 전통 타악 연주자는 전통타악기만을 사용한 독창적인 연주 형태를 구성을 통해, 전통 타악 솔리스트의 영역을 새롭게 구축한다.

This project presents a series of duo performances where Korean traditional percussion—centered around the Donghaean janggu—meets melodic instruments from both Korean and Western traditions such as daegeum, gayageum, clarinet, and cello. Through this cross-genre meeting, [1+1 = THE ONE] explores the creation of new soundscapes and forms a contemporary take on tradition.

A dialogue between Korean traditional percussion and melodic instruments
Rooted in the strong rhythmic identity of Donghaean muak(East coast shamanic music) and the expressive melodies of classical music, this project avoids genre-dominant formats. Instead, it focuses on intimate duos: one traditional percussionist and one melodic instrumentalist. These pairings highlight both contrast and harmony, creating a shared musical language that transcends borders.

Expanding acoustic tradition without electronics
Rather than relying on digital techniques like looping or MIDI, the project emphasizes the raw acoustic qualities of traditional percussion. By developing new solo configurations and performance methods, it pushes the boundaries of what a single traditional percussionist can express.

Pioneering a new role for the solo percussionist
This performance marks the beginning of a journey: to redefine the soloist role in Korean traditional percussion and build a genre where tradition meets innovation.
