홍성현은 한국전통타악계에서 주목받는 젊은 예인으로, 한국 무속타악을 기반으로 한 창작음악 작업을 꾸준히 선보이는 음악가 이다. 매년 '홍성현의 초벌비 프로젝트'를 통해 새로운 창작음악을 선보이고 있으며, 다양한 음악가들과의 협연을 통해 창작의 장을 넓혀가고 있다.
'초벌비'는 순 우리말로, '처음 내리는 반가운 비'라는 뜻을 가지고 있다. 전통적으로 한국 무속음악은 이러한 단비처럼 사람들의 마음을 정화시켜주는 기능을 해왔다. 홍성현은 '초벌비 프로젝트를 통해' 한국 전통음악을 이어가며, 일상에 지친 현대인들의 메마른 감성을 단비와 같은 음악으로 적셔주고자 한다.

Hong Sung Hyun’s Chobeolbi is a music group, led by Sunghyun Hong who is a promising musician in Janggu, an hourglass shaped percussion of Korean tradition. Hong is specialized in Korean traditional shamanic music and its transformation in contemporary. Every year, this musician presents new music program as “Chobeolbi Project Series” and he has made collaborations with various kinds of musical instruments in the project.
‘Chobeolbi’ signifies ‘the first and welcome rain’ and the meaning of the word indicates that his work gives to the audiences a cooling sensation as creative music come constantly out every year. Moreover, as the sound of Janggu is analogous to the sound of rain, the title contains his wish to ease people’s heart exhausted by the modern society. It is similar to the role of Korean shamanic music which has traditionally worked as a therapy for the people.
